About the project

On behalf of the leading German testing organization in security and safety matters DEKRA, an offline machine learning application for Android devices has been developed to automatically capture vehicle registration data.

Technology

By using the mobile phone’s camera, the application scans and identifies each field and text of a respective vehicle registration. The read data is then transferred to an existing server application for further processing and compared with already stored DEKRA master data and updated if necessary.

Overcoming data challenges

The biggest challenge was the complexity, quality and variance of the data. The recognition and processing is carried out by neural networks that learn from corrections and constantly improve the system’s accuracy. Immediate updates make sure that employees always use the latest version of the trained model and thus improve the process, time and cost efficiency.
